Herinneringen aan Marienburg
On 16th October 2017, the translated version of the novel: "Herinneringen aan Marienburg" was launched by His Excellency Shri M. J. Akbar, Minister of State External Affairs, Government of India. The launch was the result of a pleasant collaboration between the Embassy of the Republic of Suriname and the Embassy of The Kingdom of The Netherlands and the Government of India. Mrs. Cynthia McLeod, the author of the novel in Dutch was present at the launch at Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra in New Delhi and she expressed her thoughts while addressing the audience.
The novel tells the story of a female indentured labourer who was taken from India (Kolkata) to Suriname to Marienburg, then the most thriving sugar plantation of the Dutch colony Suriname and much of the story is based on a true story.
The proposal to translate the book, was initiated by the Embassy of Suriname in New Delhi and an amount of 2000 copies of the 'Special Edition' of the novel were published by the Ministry of External Affairs, India, after due permission of the original publisher, Vaco Publishing N.V. and the translation was conducted by Mr. Gerald Mettam.
